How to request items you can't find through On Demand

On Demand - catalogue

Sometimes you might not be able to find the material you want online, but we may still have it or be able to get it for you.

Published date:

We can supply items that aren’t on our catalogue through our extended search services. British Library On Demand will conduct an in-depth search of our own collections and other libraries and partners to source the item you want.

Business account customers

We can supply you with a list of locations for you to order the item yourself or obtain the item on your behalf.  You will need to fill out this online order form and provide your customer code and its corresponding password. You may also be able to place requests through your library management system.

You can also use the service to submit a speculative request, if you’re not quite sure what you’re looking for or if the British Library holds it.

Personal account customers

Your local, national or institution library may be able to submit a request for the item you want on your behalf.

Please note, for scans and photographs of the British Library's historic collections and newspapers please use our Imaging Services.
