A night of breathtaking live music, radical sound and silent film
Join us for a night of radical sound and silent film directed by Gabriel Prokofiev with the superb musicians of the Renegade Orchestra. Echoes of Russian classical music greats are cut with sonic experimentation and electronica, reflecting the remarkable avant-garde experimentation of a century ago, alongside a screening of the 1927 film The End of St Petersburg and DJs from Nonclassical. You can also see the Russian Revolution: Hope, Tragedy, Myths exhibition after hours, included in your ticket price.
We open the evening with the premiere of Dash Arts’ Renegade Orchestra, a revolutionary piece of music theatre written by Russian composer Alexander Manotskov with musicians from across the region. Then Vsevelod Pudovkin’s brilliant film The End of St Petersburg which beautifully depicts Russian peasants’ struggle and journey towards Revolution in 1917, will be accompanied by a live soundtrack from Gabriel Prokofiev, Alexander Manotskov, The Renegade Orchestra and UK-based musicians, including theremin virtuoso Lydia Kavina. Monumental sounds, sirens, strings and foley instruments are combined with elements from works of the period by composers such as Sergei Prokofiev (grandfather of Gabriel) and the legendary experimentalists Mosolov, Avraamov and Matyushin.
Please note this is not a seated event. Doors open 19.30, performances from 20.15. The exhibition gallery will close at 22.00.
Presented in association with Dash Arts, Nonclassical and Kino Klassika, and with the support of PRS for Music Foundation (The End of St Petersburg) and the Oleg Prokofiev Trust and Cockayne - Grants for the Arts (Renegade Orchestra)
Shadows of Days: An Evening of Russian Émigré Fiction takes place earlier the same evening (additional ticket required).
